Artist: Gary Gillot
I was born and raised in Durban, a port city on the east coast of South Africa.
After completing my studies, I moved north to Empangeni, a small farming town in the heart of sub-tropical Zululand. My wife, Robyn and I were married during this time.
After Zululand, we moved to London, before returning to Westville, South Africa.
After South Africa it was Auckland, New Zealand and now Sydney.
I am largely a self-taught photographer learning mainly through books, manuals, workshops and seminars. My inspiration has been largely due to books and photographs of the old, and not so old masters. In particular, Henri Cartier-Bresson.
I photograph predominantly in black and white. My favourite print film is Ilford Pan F 50. I love the ultra fine grain. Both my ‘ Portobello Road, London, 1991’ and ‘ Portobello Road# 2, London, 1991’ were taken using this film. , 1991’ and ‘ # 2, London, 1991’ were taken using this film.
I have recently and reluctantly made the switch to digital. While the picture quality is not quite up to the quality of good film, it is very close. My print ‘Kirribilli, Sydney, 2006’ is digital.
