Artist: Garry Fleming

Garry Fleming grew up in Sydney’s south, close to the scenic George’s river. Garry lived with his grandfather, a keen fisherman. “After school time” would begin with a short cycle to the river’s edge, where they would sit and fish the afternoon away, whilst Garry’s Grandfather would tell him tales of the “ olden days”. This was Garry’s inspiration for his love of wildlife and storytelling.

Garry attended a nearby high school before landing a job as an illustrator designing souvenirs, eg T-shirts and postcards, etc. but his love to paint wildlife grew stronger and after five years he decided to leave the studio and pursue a career as a full-time wildlife artist and book illustrator.

He held his first wildlife exhibition at the North Shore Gallery in 1989 which was a sellout.

To date Fleming has had several successful wildlife exhibitions and has had over seventy book titles published. To his credit he has won many awards. These include:

Wilderness Award three times:

1993 for the book ‘Wild Australia Close-Up’

1999 for the book ‘Pobblebonks’

2000 for the book ‘Frogs & Toads’.

First prize in the R.A.S. Birds and Wildflowers section, Sydney Royal Show 1996, 1998 1999.

1999 - The Zoological Award

2002 - Highly Commended Award Victorian Wildlife Art Society.

The Children’s Book Council’s prestigious ‘Notable Book Award’ three times.

Garry has represented Australia in Europe in 1993 and 1994 with his wildlife art.

It was the 1994 publication of ‘Bollygum’ (his first attempt at writing) that gave Fleming his first No.1 Best Seller on the Children’s Picture Book List. It is in its 15th reprint .

‘Bollygum’ also has its very own theme/tourist park designed and named from the book. It is located in King Lake, Victoria.  It is listed as a stock book with all major booksellers.

His more recent publications, one titled “Dinosaurs” has sales figures of over 250,000 copies in its first 3 months of publication.

Animals of the World which has current sales figures of over one million copies, are being sold around the world and published in over 40 different languages. These are being followed up with a list of products, including puzzles, prints, and giftware, establishing Fleming as one of Australia’s leading and most published wildlife artists.

Fleming’s original works are available at Pymble Gallery, Sydney, and throughout the U.S and UK. He recently had one of his originals auctioned by Christies of London.

Fleming now lives in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

He has never called himself an artist -  I am just someone who can paint. Some people call it a gift.  I want to use this gift to honour nature and all her wild places”.

Garry Fleming’s original works are highly sought after. They have grown substantially in value in recent years making them a sound investment.
